Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari
The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari at Imola hosts some of the most important Italian races: the San Marino Gran Prix of Formula One, the Gran Prix d'Italia of the Superbike world championship, competitions for the Formula 3000 world championship and that of Endurance. It is a multi-functional facility where, in addition to races, events of great attraction are held such as the Mostra Scambio - the most important Italian appointment in the sector for cars, motorcycles, bicycles, accessories and spare parts from the past - concerts, presentations of new car
and motorcycle models. The first stone for the circuit was laid on 22 March 1950, but it was only in 1953 that the first sports event was held, the Gran Premio Coni, valid for the Italian world championship of the 125 and the 500. Cars arrived in the following year, when "Conchiglia d'oro Shell" brought a thrilling challenge between Ferrari and Maserati to Imola. The first Formula One race (untitled at the time) was run in 1963. Two years later the facility was perfected, and began to take on the features of a true automobile racing track, with a covered grandstand. In 1969 it hosted for the first time the Motomondiale, while three years later Checco Costa, the ingenious inventor of motorcycle events, created for Imola the 200 Miglia, inspired by Daytona. In 1979 it became a permanent race track; up till then, in fact, some brief sections of track were still being used for ordinary traffic. On 14 September 1980 for the Autodromo di Imola, the Formula One era officially opened, with the running of the 51st Gran Prix of Italy, transferred here for that year from Monza, while May 3 of the following year was the birthday of the San Marino Gran Prix, which has been since then a fixed appointment for all racing enthusiasts.
